Cosgrove, 48, held a similar post at Wisconsin for the past nine seasons. He also will serve as a linebackers coach at Nebraska. He spent 12 years with Callahan, five at Wisconsin and seven at Illinois.

"Kevin is a proven recruiter and will be an excellent defensive coordinator for us," said Callahan. "He also has coached in Colorado and Missouri, hot beds for Big 12 recruiting."

Cosgrove replaces Bo Pelini, who coached the Cornhuskers on an interim basis in their 17-3 Alamo Bowl victory over Michigan State following the firing of Frank Solich. Pelini was released y Callahan earlier this week.
