Contract extension for Herman Edwards

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Jan. 15 (UPI) -- The New York Jets have extended the contract of Coach Herman Edwards for two more seasons.

Financial terms were not disclosed. Edwards had two left on his current contract.

The move came despite the Jets' worst season since 1996. They were 6-10 this season, but played the first six games without star quarterback Chad Pennington, who was out with a broken wrist.

A contract extension was expected after General Manager Terry Bradway confirmed after the season that talks had begun on a new deal.

"It was just a matter of when we were going to get it done," Edwards said. "In three years, we've done some pretty good things. Haven't reached where we wanted to go, but we're headed in the right direction."

Edwards, 48, is 25-23 in three seasons with the Jets, but he directed New York to playoff appearances in 2001 and 2002. He became the first Jets' coach since Joe Walton in 1985 and '86 to take the team to the postseason in back-to-back years.

This is expected to be an active postseason for the Jets, who are expected to have at least six new starters in 2004. Edwards already has fired defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell.
