NHL: Colorado 3, Anaheim 1

DENVER, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Paul Kariya scored in his first meeting with his former team Tuesday as the Colorado Avalanche posted a 3-1 victory over the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

The Mighty Ducks' all-time leader in goals and assists, Kariya missed the first two games against them this season due to a wrist injury. But he helped put away this one, making it 3-0 on the power play 5 1/2 minutes into the second period.

Kariya became a free agent in the offseason when Anaheim General Manager Bryan Murray opted not to extend the necessary $10 million qualifying offer to retain his rights.

Peter Forsberg and defenseman Ro Blake also scored for the Avalanche, who won for the seventh time in eight games (7-1-0).

Sergei Fedorov snapped David Aebischer's shutout bid 4:54 into the third period, but the Mighty Ducks had their unbeaten streak reach a season-high seven games (0-4-3).
