Top seeds win first round of Tata Open

CHENNAI, India, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Spaniard Carlos Moya and defending champ Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand were among five seeded winners Tuesday in the first round of the Tata Open.

Moya, the top seed who reached the quarterfinals in his only prior appearance here in 1999, won 6-3, 6-4 over Noam Okun of Israel.

The second-seeded Srichaphan improved to 10-1 lifetime in this event with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Spain's Albert Montanes. Srichaphan lost to Guillermo Canas in the 2002 final.

Third-seeded Dutchman Sjeng Schalken ousted Thai qualifier Danai Udomchoke, 6-4, 7-5; No. 4 Tommy Robredo of Spain overcame Russian Dmitry Tursunov, 7-5, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4; and fifth-seeded Spaniard Felix Mantilla dispatched Czech qualifier Jan Vacek, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

Frenchman Thierry Ascione was the first to eliminate a seeded player with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 victory over Spanish sixth seed Rafael Nadal.
