Rain halts AAPT championship tennis play

ADELAIDE, Australia, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Two seeded players advanced Tuesday in the $380,000 AAPT Championship before rain halted play in Adelaide, Australia.

Third-seeded Frenchman Arnaud Clement began his quest for a third career title by coasting past Romanian Victor Hanescu, 6-3, 6-2 in the first round. Clement went 31-20 in 2003.

Eighth seed Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador also moved into the second round with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Irakli Labadze of Georgia. Lapentti has five career titles.

Italian Davide Sanguinetti had the biggest rout of the day, a 6-1, 6-1 pounding of German qualifier Daniel Elsner. Slovakian Dominik Hrbaty recorded a 6-1, 6-4 win over Frenchman Julien Benneteau.

France's Michael Llodra was the only qualifier to advance, defeating German Lars Burgsmuller, 6-3, 6-2.

England's Greg Rusedski held a 6-4, 3-1 lead over Swiss qualifier Stanislas Wawrinka when rain suspended play.

Three matches did not begin and will be played Wednesday. First prize of this hardcourt event is $52,000.
