SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- The Utah Jazz, in need of depth at center, have signed Paul Grant, who has participated in the team's training camp the last two years.

He played in one preseason game, scoring six points, before being released on Oct. 13.

The Jazz were in need of help in the middle after learning on Wednesday that Ben Handlogten will be out for the rest of the season because of a torn right ACL. Starting center Greg Ostertag has missed two of the last three games with an inflamed left knee but is listed as probable

for Friday's game against Memphis. Jarron Collins has started in place of Ostertag.

Grant originally was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the 1997 draft. He missed the entire season because of foot and ankle injuries, was traded to Milwaukee during the 1998-99 season, and played in just two games due to tendinitis in both knees.

He spent the last three seasons in the lower levels of professional basketball and overseas.
