NHL: Washington 2, New Jersey 2 (OT)

WASHINGTON, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Joel Kwiatkowski scored a power-play goal early in the third period Thursday night to help Washington earn a tie with New Jersey, 2-2.

Washington bounced back after being crushed by Buffalo than 24 hours earlier, 7-1.

The Capitals faced a 2-1 deficit when Devils center Scott Gomez was whistled for interfering with Washington goaltender Olaf Kolzig 2:21 into the third period. With 20 seconds left in the power play, Kwiatkowski slapped a rebound of a shot by Sergei Gonchar past Martin Brodeur to even the score.

Mike Grier opened the scoring 6:58 into the contest for Washington, which had lost three straight games and four of five. The Capitals still are searching for their 1,000th all-time victory.
