George O'Leary suffers heart attack

EDINA, Minn., Jan. 1 (UPI) -- New Central Florida football coach George O'Leary is resting in a suburban Minneapolis hospital after suffering a heart attack on Wednesday.

A source for the Minnesota Vikings told the Orlando Sentinel that O'Leary was stricken at his Eden Prairie, Minn., home after experiencing chest pains. It was his final workday with the Vikings, who did not qualify for the NFL playoffs. He was the team's defensive coordinator this past season.

The source told the paper that O'Leary's is in serious but stable condition and that he would be hospitalized through Saturday.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported that, according to Vikings coach Mike Tice, doctors at Fairview Southdale Hospital performed angioplasty on a blocked artery and inserted a stent.

That paper also said O'Leary, who was hired by UCF on Dec. 8, has been told not to fly for two weeks. He had planned to fly to Orlando on Friday to begin his new job.

"My concern first and foremost is for Coach O'Leary's health," UCF Athletic Director Steve Orsini, who has spoken with O'Leary, told the Sentinel. "I have assured him not to be concerned about his immediate responsibilities until he gets the go-ahead from his doctors."

O'Leary also suffered chest pains on the sidelines during a game against Chicago on Dec. 14.
