Carolina fell behind early, but Ron Francis tied it early in the second period, moving into a tie with Marcel Dionne for fourth place on the all-time scoring list with 1,771 points.
Murray got the decisive goal with 4:50 remaining in the period when he tipped defenseman Bret Hedican's shot from just inside the blue line past goaltender Mika Noronen.
Curtis Brown scored the lone goal for the Sabres, who had a three-game unbeaten streak snapped and fell to 2-8-1 in their last 11 contests.
