Two bowl games on Friday

PHOENIX, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Kevin Jones makes his final appearance for Virginia Tech Friday as the Hokies take on California in the Insight Bowl at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix, Ariz.

The star running back announced he would not be back for his senior year and will enter the NFL draft.

Jones, projected as a top 15 pick, rushed for a school-record 1,494 yards and set another mark with eight 100-yard games. He ranks third on the Hokies' all-time rushing list with 3,322 yards, 137 yards behind Roscoe Coles.

The Hokies' defense struggled down the stretch and could be tested again by a California offense that features the Pac-10's leading receiver in Geoff McArthur and second-leading rusher in Adimchinobe Echemandu.

Also Friday, Bowling Green takes on Northwestern in the Motor City Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit.

BGU is led by quarterback Josh Harris, who needs 79 yards of total offense to break the Mid-American Conference record of 4,267 held by Marshall's Byron Leftwich.
