Marquette's James Matthews leaves school

MILWAUKEE, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Marquette announced Sunday that James Matthews, a highly touted freshman forward, will not be returning to the school.

Matthews, who never saw action, was suspended after the season opener in order to focus on academics. The 6-8 forward was considered a prized recruit from Detroit and has been mentioned as a possible starter.

"The best thing for James is to pursue his education and basketball career at another institution," Coach Tom Crean said. "If he applies himself in the right way, he can be productive. Our basketball program wishes him the best."

Matthews had a checkered high school career and was ineligible his senior year at Detroit's Denby High School because he reportedly did not attend classes his freshman year at a high school in Los Angeles.
