White became the fourth Sooner to win college football's most prestigious award but the first quarterback. Oklahoma's previous winners were running backs -- Billy Vessels in 1952, Steve Owens in 1969 and Billy Sims in 1978.
Only Notre Dame (7), Ohio State (6) and Southern California (5) have had more Heisman Trophy winners than Oklahoma.
In a close vote, White received 1,481 points, 128 more than Pittsburgh sophomore wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. Mississippi quarterback Eli Manning was third and Michigan running back Chris Perry fourth.
White suffered season-ending knee injuries the previous two years and needed to win back his starting job in spring practice. He emerged as the nation's top-rated passer, completing 265-of-414 passes for 3,744 yards, a school-record 40 touchdowns and just eight interceptions.
