Wannstedt denies Nebraska coaching offer

MIAMI, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Miami Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt is denying an Internet report he is being considered for the University of Nebraska's head coaching job.

ESPN.com reported Monday Wannstedt was among several current and former NFL head coaches contacted by Nebraska Athletic Director Steve Pederson following the recent firing of Frank Solich.

But the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel reported Tuesday Wannstedt, communicating through team spokesman Harvey Greene, said he has not spoken with Pederson. And a Dolphins source told the newspaper team executives had not received a courtesy call from Pederson asking for permission to speak with Wannstedt or any other member of the team's coaching staff.

"My focus is solely on beating the Eagles," Wannstedt said in a statement released by the team. "(Nebraska) is not even on the radar screen."

The Sun-Sentinel said Wannstedt's contract runs through the 2004 season, but his job security would be in jeopardy if the Dolphins (8-5) fail to reach the playoffs for a second consecutive season.
