NHL: Toronto 5, Detroit 2

TORONTO, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Brett Hull tied Marcel Dionne for third place all-time goal-scoring Saturday but Toronto scored three times in the second period to beat Detroit, 5-2.

It was Toronto's eighth straight win.

Only Wayne Gretzky (89) and Gordie Howe (801) have more goals than Hull, whose 731st came with 20 seconds left in the first period as he cut along the goal line and lifted a backhander off the mask of goaltender Ed Belfour.

But it was all Maple Leafs thereafter as they matched the third-longest winning streak in their history. The record is a 10-game run from Oct. 7-28, 1993.

Defenseman Bryan Marchment ended a 56-game drought 2:46 into the second period and Tie Domi put the Maple Leafs ahead at 13:34. Gary Roberts beat goalie Manny Legace 23 seconds later to make it 3-1.

Mats Sundin and Matt Stajan added third-period goals for Toronto.
