Gordon, 36, was also heavily courted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, who wanted him in the closer's role. However, Gordon reportedly took more money from the Yankees and will likely serve as the primary set-up guy for Mariano Rivera.

Known for a knee-buckling curveball, Gordon was 7-6 with 12 saves and a 3.16 ERA for the Chicago White Sox last season. He appeared in 66 games, and struck out 91 in 74 innings.

The Yankees have also been pursuing free agent reliever Paul Quantrill and are trying to re-sign relievers Felix Heredia and Gabe White.
