The Cavaliers had lost four of their last six games overall.

The Hokies (8-4) seemed to wilt when a touchdown after a blocked punt was negated by an offside penalty. Given new life, Schaub completed a 49-yard scoring pass to Alvin Pearman to give Virginia the lead for good with 4:26 left in the third quarter.

Bryan Randall completed 14-of-26 passes for 214 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions for the Hokies (8-4), who lost four of their final six regular season games.

Record-setting running back Kevin Jones of the Hokies had two touchdowns in defeat.
