TAMPA, Fla., Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Jussi Markkanen made 36 saves season and rookie Jed Ortmeyer had his first NHL goal Tuesday as the New York Rangers blanked Tampa Bay, 2-0.
Playing for the injured Mike Dunham, Markkanen recorded his seventh shutout in just 43 NHL appearances and improved to 3-2-1 this season. Dunham missed his fourth straight game due to a groin injury.
Ortmeyer went five NHL games without a point before stuffing home a rebound of his own shot for a 2-0 lead with 1:29 left in the first period.
Mark Messier scored his team-leading ninth goal for the Rangers, who snapped a four-game road winless streak (0-2-2) on the opener of a five-game trip.
While they are off to the best start in team history at 11-3-3-1, the Lightning have been shut out in consecutive games, with a scoreless tie in Carolina Sunday.
