EDMONTON, Alberta, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Jose Theodore braved sub-zero temperatures and stopped 34 shots Saturday night as Montreal defeated Edmonton, 4-3, in the NHL's first-ever outdoor game.
Montreal got two goals from Richard Zednik.
With wind chills at Commonwealth Stadium dipping well below zero, Theodore wore a toque atop his helmet. The former Hart Trophy winner held Edmonton to a single goal until the final seven minutes, when rookie Jarret Stoll and defenseman Steve Staios made things interesting.
The Heritage Classic, which featured a game between old-timers from both teams, drew an NHL-record crowd of 57,167 to the home of football's Edmonton Eskimos. The previous mark was 28,183 for a playoff game between Philadelphia and Tampa Bay on April 23, 1996.
