"Al Seagraves is a quality person and has handled his duties in a highly professional manner," White said. "I have deep admiration and the utmost respect for Al's tireless efforts. He has been fully committed to our football program and to our University."

During his tenure, the Phoenix moved from Division II to I-AA, and joined the Southern Conference in 1999.

He had a record of 8-25 in the past three years, including 2-10 this season, and Seagraves told the Greensboro (N.C.) News and Record the firing was not a surprise.

"We've fallen on three lean years," he told the paper. "It didn't come as a shock to me."

A search committee as been formed to find a successor.
