Oates, 41, who is sixth on the all-time assists list, had a $3.5 million option for the 2003-04 season declined by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in June. He had contemplated retirement but the Oilers were able to change his mind.

"Adam is a world-class passer, and one of the best faceoff specialists in the history of the game," said General Manager Kevin Lowe.

Injured center Marty Reasoner would be out at least a month. The Oilers already are trying to overcame the holdout of Mike Comrie.

"I haven't been able to get much ice time of course, but I don't think it will take me too long to get back to game shape," Oates said.

In his 17 seasons, Oates, a six-time All-Star, has 1,063 assists and 1,402 points in 1,277 regular season games.
