NHL: Washington 2, Carolina 1

RALEIGH, N.C., Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Olaf Kolzig made 38 saves and Dainius Zubrus' power-play goal snapped a tie with 2:13 left Saturday as Washington edged Carolina, 2-1.

The Capitals had a hard time generating offense and might not have made it two in a row vs. Carolina if not for Kolzig.

Playing behind an inexperienced defense, Kolzig stopped 21 shots in the second period, rebounding from Friday's loss to Tampa Bay in which he surrendered five goals and was pulled after two periods.

Rookie Eric Staal scored the Hurricanes' lone goal with 4:47 left in the second period, tapping in a loose puck to forge a 1-1 tie.

Kolzig was rewarded with a win after Zubrus scored his seventh goal of the season and third in two games against Carolina.
