COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Mike Nugent had a 36-yard field goal to open the overtime and Ben Jones missed from 37 yards Saturday as No. 4 Ohio State beat No. 10 Purdue, 16-13.
Ohio State (10-1), currently third in the Bowl Championship Series standings, improved to 4-0 all-time in overtime games and will visit No. 5 Michigan next week in a game that will decide the Big Ten Conference title.
The Buckeyes won their first national title since 1968 last season.
Ohio State had a chance to win on the final play of regulation following a fumble by Kyle Orton, but Nugent had a 41-yard field goal attempt blocked.
Ohio State had the ball first and went ahead on Nugent's field goal. Orton completed a 13-yard pass to Taylor Subblefield on 3rd-and-12 to keep Purdue's drive alive, but the Boilermakers (8-3) settled for the missed field goal try.
