Thornton, 32, is second on the team with five assists and nine points, and played his 700th career game Tuesday, a 4-3 loss to Colorado.

"He's an important part of this team in the present and the future, not only with his skating and physical presence, but he's taken on a leadership role," said Coach Doug Wilson. "I don't want to say he is just scratching the surface, because he's had some pretty good years, but there is another level to his game."

Thornton had a career-high 26 goals in the 2001-02 season, when the Sharks won their first division title. Originally selected in the first round of the 1989 draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, Thornton has 113 goals and 112 assists with 1,197 penalty minutes.

The signing comes after the Sharks decided not to re-sign veteran forwards Teemu Selanne and Adam Graves in the offseason.
