Rich Gannon goes to injured reserve

OAKLAND, Calif., Nov. 13 (UPI) -- The Oakland Raiders have ended the 2003 season of quarterback Rich Gannon by placing him on injured reserve.

Coach Bill Callahan said a decision was made on Wednesday that Gannon will have surgery on his ailing right shoulder, which has a torn labrum and puts his playing future in doubt.

He will turn 38 in December.

"We wanted to see how it was going to progress,'' Callahan said. "The shoulder didn't progress the way it was supposed to. He tried to throw (Tuesday). He got the ball above his head but could not actually throw the football. It is extremely tough to lose a player of this caliber and what he provides to this team."

Gannon was last injured on Oct. 20 against Kansas City. For the season, he went 125-of-225 for 1,274 yards with six touchdowns and four interceptions, and was sacked 17 times.

The injury-riddled Raiders, who are just 2-7, also have linebacker Bill Romanowski, backup quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo, and guard Matt Stinchcomb on IR.
