CLEMSON, S.C., Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Tommy Bowden finally beat his father Saturday as Clemson shocked Florida State, 26-10, knocking the No. 3 Seminoles out of the national title race.
The elder Bowden watched his offense sputter badly as the Seminoles (8-2) were blanked until Xavier Beitia kicked a 46-yard field goal with 3:23 remaining in the third quarter.
Charlie Whitehurst rushed for a touchdown and also passed for a score as Clemson defeated an opponent ranked in the top three for the first time in school history.
Aaron Hunt kicked four field goals for the Tigers, who beat Florida State for the first time in ACC play. Florida State had been been 11-0 against Clemson since joining the ACC in 1992.
With Clemson (6-4) enduring an up-and-down campaign, there has been speculation that Tommy Bowden's job could be in jeopardy.
