Patriots place Patten on IR

FOXBORO, Mass., Nov. 7 (UPI) -- The New England Patriots have placed wide receiver David Patten on injured reserve, ending his season.

Patten, 29, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Wednesday at Massachusetts General Hospital after missing New England's last three games. He had been experiencing pain since jamming his leg into the turf while making a catch in the Sept. 21 game against the New York Jets.

After sitting out the following week, Patten played in wins over Tennessee and the New York Giants and caught four passes for 68 yards, but the pain persisted and prevented him from playing in New England's last three games.

The seven-year veteran was the Patriots' No. 2 receiver to Troy Brown since joining the team in 2001, New England's championship season. He caught 61 passes for 824 yards in 2002, and had just nine catches for 142 yards in five games this season.

The Patriots also have waived rookie safety Shawn Mayer, who played primarily on special teams.
