Mayweather retains WBC lightweight title

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Floyd Mayweather Jr. dominated South Africa's Phillip N'Dou Saturday night before recording a seventh-round TKO to retain his WBC lightweight championship.

Mayweather, 26, considered one of boxing's best pound-for-pound fighters, returned to his hometown of Grand Rapids, Mich., much to the delight of fans at Van Andel Arena. He hurt N'Dou in the fifth and sixth rounds, then used three strong rights to send him to the canvas in the seventh.

Mayweather (31-0, 21 KOs) improved to 13-0 in title fights, including three in Grand Rapids as holder of the WBC super featherweight belt. This was the third and possibly final time he defended the 135-pound crown. He considers a move up in weight to fight Oscar de la Hoya or Arturo Gatti.

N'dou had a 21-fight winning streak halted and fell to 31-2. He was the WBC's second-ranked contender.

On the undercard, Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico added the WBA featherweight championship to his IBF title with a seventh-round TKO of Derrick Gainer.
