Bryan Berard signs with Blackhawks

CHICAGO, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- With injuries and a disappointing record, the Chicago Blackhawks reached out to free agent defenseman Bryan Berard on Friday.

The Blackhawks have started the season with a 3-5-3-0 mark and are dealing with injuries to centers Eric Daze and Alex Zhamnov. They are hoping Berard will help jump-start an offense that has scored a division-low 18 goals and contribute to a defense that has yielded a division-high 28 goals.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Berard appeared in 80 games last season with the Boston Bruins, scoring 10 goals and adding 28 assists with 64 penalty minutes.

He played in his 400th career game last season and recorded his 200th career NHL point, but the Bruins allowed him to become a free agent in August by rejecting the $2.51 million salary set by an arbitrator.
