Niners release Pochman, sign Peterson

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- The San Francisco 49ers released kicker Owen Pochman Tuesday and signed veteran kicker Todd Peterson.

A major disappointment since signing with the Niners on Sept. 16 to replace Jeff Chandler, Pochman missed seven field goal attempts in his last four games.

Pochman's struggles were magnified in Sunday's 16-13 loss to the Arizona Cardinas. He missed his only two field goals, including a potentia go-ahead 35-yard attempt with 2:25 remaining in the fourth quarter, then sent the kickoff in overtime out of bounds to help set up the Cardinas' winning score.

Pochman made 8-of-15 field goal attempts. Prior to getting released, Chandler was 6-of-7, but Coach Dennis Erickson was unhappy with his distance.

Now Erickson turns to Peterson, his kicker with Seattle while Erickson was coach from 1995-98. During his time with Seattle from 1995-99, Peterson connected on 126-of-154 field goas.
