The Islanders had only a handful of scoring chances against Brodeur, who made a dazzling glove save to stop Shawn Bates on a breakaway just three minutes into the opening period and denied defenseman Kenny Jonsson from the slot with 13:44 to go in the second.

The Devils had a 1-0 lead when Pandolfo slipped the puck under goaltender Rick DiPietro just 90 seconds into the second period.

Brian Gionta made it 3-0 at 7:29 of the third period and Madden capped the scoring 16 seconds later.
