Ferrero, Roddick win at Paribas Masters

PARIS, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero and Andy Roddick, battling for No. 1 ranking, earned second-round victories Tuesday at the BNP Paribas Masters.

Ferrero, the top seed, saved a set point and was pushed hard by French qualifier Nicolas Mahut, but battled to a 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 win.

Ferrero, the French Open winner and U.S. Open runner-up to Roddick, is seeking to add points over his American rival.

Roddick is seeded second and had an even tougher time against Romanian qualifier Victor Hanescu, but prevailed, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4).

Eighth-seeded Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand advanced with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory over Karol Beck of Slovakia.

Hicham Arazi won a battle of Moroccans when Younes El Aynaoui retired with a heel injury. El Aynaoui was leading, 6-4, 3-6, 2-1, when he was forced to retire.
