Reds name O'Brien GM

CINCINNATI, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- The Cincinnati Reds have named Dan O'Brien their new general manager.

O'Brien, who had been the assistant general manager of the Texas Rangers since October 1996, received a three-year contract.

Financial terms were not revealed.

One of his biggest decisions will be whether to retain interim manager Dave Miley, who replaced the fired Bob Boone. The Reds also canned GM Jim Bowden last season after Cincinnati got off to a 46-58 start in its first season at Great American Ball Park.

The Reds finished 69-93, one game ahead of last-place Milwaukee in the National League Central.

O'Brien, 49, will be joining a team that has been reluctant to spend money on high-priced free agents. The team also traded a number of marquee players, including third baseman Aaron Boone, and relievers Gabe White and Scott Williamson.

O'Brien spent 15 seasons in the front office of the Houston Astros before going to Texas, where he held several posts, including assistant director of the minor leagues and scouting.
