SONOMA, Calif., Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Jim Thorpe held off Tom Watson Sunday to win the Champions Tour's season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
In winning wire to wire, Thorpe carded a 4-under-par 68. His four-round tournament-record total of 20-under 268 was three strokes better than Watson and five ahead of Tom Kite.
Thorpe collected the $440,000 top prize and finished second on the money list with a career-best $1.83 million.
Thorpe missed a series of putts on the front nine before nailing a 70-footer for eagle at the 17th hole.
Watson finished just $23,000 ahead of Thorpe for the money title and also topped the Charles Schwab Cup point standings, which comes with a $1 million annuity which Watson said he will donate entirely to charity.
Gil Morgan, Bruce Lietzke and Hale Irwin rounded out the top five on the money list.
