OAKLAND, Calif., Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Nick Van Exel will miss the opening week of the season for the Golden State Warriors after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Monday.
Van Exel had a loose particle removed from the knee in Dallas and will miss the next three weeks. He suffered the injury in practice last Monday and has missed the last two preseason games.
The Warriors acquired Van Exel as part of a nine-player deal with the Dallas Mavericks on Aug. 18. He will fill the void left by Gilbert Arenas, who was the starting point guard for Golden State last season but left via free agency.
Van Exel, 31, came off the bench for the Mavericks last season and averaged 12.5 points and 4.3 assists in 73 games.
Van Exel has career averages of 15.5 points and 7.2 assists in 723 games with Dallas, Denver and the Los Angeles Lakers.
