John Madden fanned on a clearing attempt in the neutral zone and Brad Richards chipped the puck ahead to St. Louis, who got behind defenseman Scott Stevens to create a 2-on-1.

Benched for Game Five of last season's playoff series, Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 29 shots for the Lightning, who improved to just 5-18-2 in the regular season at New Jersey.

Patrik Elias and rookie defenseman Paul Martin scored for New Jersey, which opened the season with a win and two ties.
