NHL: Detroit 3, Los Angeles 2

DETROIT, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Steve Yzerman scored with 1.7 seconds left Thursday night as Detroit rallied for a season-opening, 3-2 victory over Los Angeles.

The late goal made the return of Dominik Hasek a successful one.

Yzerman, 38, watched newcomer Ray Whitney attract a pair of defenders near the Kings' blue line, took a behind-the-back pass in the high slot and beat Roman Cechmanek with a quick snap shot.

It was the 661st career goal for Yzerman, the long-time Red Wings' captain who missed all but 16 games last season following knee surgery.

The goal made a winner of Hasek, the six-time Vezina Trophy winner who played an NHL game for the first time in 482 days. He returned to the Red Wings following a one-year hiatus, which came on the heels of Detroit's 2002 Stanley Cup championship.
