Newman wins NASCAR Banquet 400

KANSAS CITY, Kan., Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Ryan Newman passed fellow Dodge driver Jeremy Mayfield with 27 laps remaining Sunday and went on to win th NASCAR Winston Cup Banquet 400.

The driver from South Bend, Ind., pulled away for his Winston Cup-best eighth win of the season and ninth of his career.

The top three cars at the 1 1/2-mile oval were Dodge Intrepids as veteran Bill Elliott was second and Mayfield third. Defending Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart was the highst-finishing non-Dodge, placing fourth in a Chvrolet Monte Carlo.

With 19 laps remaining, the yellow flag waved when Johnny Benson's Pontiac Grand Prix smacked the wall in turn 4. The green flag waved on lap 253, with Newman in front of Mayfield and Elliott, who passed Mayfield for second with 10 laps to go.

Newman defeated Elliott by 0.863 seconds, with Jeff Gordon rounding out the top five in a Chvrolet.
