Alfredsson ends five-year drought

LINCOLN, Calif., Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Helen Alfredsson ended a lengthy drought Sunday at the LPGA Longs Drugs Challenge, where Pat Hurst double-bogeyed the 18th hole to lose by a stroke.

Hurst took a one-shot lead to the final hole but four-putted from 80 feet. She missed a 2 1/2-footer for bogey that would have forced a playoff.

Hurst's problems set the stage for Alfredsson's first win since the 1998 Welch's/Circle K Championship. The 38-year-old Swede closed with four straight pars to end her drought and take home $150,000.

Alfredsson shot a 2-under-par 70 that included her first two bogeys since Thursday. She had a four-round total of 13-under 275 for her fifth career win.

Hurst settled for a tie for second with Australia's Rachel Teske and Koreans Se Ri Pak, Grace Park and Jung Yeon Lee.
