Rockets sign Jackson, trade Rice

HOUSTON, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- The Houston Rockets bolstered their perimeter Tuesday by signing veteran swingman Jim Jackson, who had been with the Sacramento Kings.

The Rockets also dealt veteran forward Glen Rice and cash to the Utah Jazz for backup center John Amaechi and a future second-round draft pick.

Jackson was a valuable reserve last year in his only season with the Kings when he averaged 7.7 points and 4.2 rebounds. Jackson performed even better in the postseason, averaging 11.3 points in 12 contests.

Amaechi played his last two seasons with Utah after stints with Cleveland and Orlando. The 6-10 native of Britain fell into Jazz Coach Jerry Sloan's doghouse last season and averaged 2.0 points and 1.5 rebounds in 9.5 minutes.

The addition of Jackson is the third perimeter player the Rockets have added this offseason for Coach Jeff Van Gundy's first season.
