SEATTLE, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Subject: BASEBALL NOTE
The Seattle Mariners and Lamar Johnson on Monday mutually decided he would not return as the club's hitting coach in 2004.
The Mariners finished with a respectable .271 batting average, but their offense hit just .251 in September and scored just 107 runs. The sub-par showing at the plate led to a 13-16 record in the final month against a schedule of mostly sub-.500 opponents.
Johnson, who has been a hitting coach for the last nine seasons with Milwaukee, Kansas City and Seattle, met with management Monday and the parties mutually decided he would not return.
