Sorenstam claims fifth win of season

PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Annika Sorenstam repeated at the LPGA Safeway Classic Sunday, birdying the 17th hole for a one-stroke victory over Hall of Famer Beth Daniel.

The birdie putt capped a 6-under-par 66 for Sorenstam, whose 54-hole total of 15-under 201 was two strokes short of her own tournament record. She leads the LPGA with five wins and the $180,000 first prize boosted her 2003 earnings to $1,695,006.

The Swedish superstar was tied for the lead with Daniel and Cristie Kerr after Saturday's second round. Daniel capped a bogey-free 67 with eight pars and Kerr bogeyed two of the final four holes for a closing 69 that left her three shots back.

Sorenstam became the first repeat champion of this tournament since Hall of Famer Kathy Whitworth in 1972-73. Sorenstam joins Whitworth and Daniel in the Hall of Fame on Oct. 9, her 33rd birthday.
