Arizona 7, St. Louis 6

PHOENIX, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Carlos Baerga delivered a tie-breaking RBI single in the sixth inning Friday night as Arizona topped St. Louis, 7-6.

The loss eliminated the Cardinals from postseason competition. They entered the contest, needing at least a series sweep, their slim hopes died with the setback.

Baerga's hit came as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning. It tied the club record set by former Diamondback Dave Dellucci, who had 18 in 2001.

Arizona reliever Steve Randolph (8-1) gave up an RBI double to Chris Widger in the top of the sixth, but still earned his first win since Aug. 13. Closer Matt Mantei allowed a two-out solo homer to Jim Edmonds in the ninth before striking out Albert Pujols for his 29th save in 32 chances.
