Ljubicic pulls off surprise in Thailand

BANGKOK, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Sixth seed Ivan Ljubicic upset Thai hero Paradorn Srichaphan Friday to reach the semifinals of the inaugural Thailand Open.

Ljubicic eliminated the fourth seed, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5, to advance to his third semifinal of the year. He will square off against top seed Juan Carlos Ferrero, a player he has defeated twice.

Ferrero got past France's Gregory Carraz, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2). The 23-year-old Spaniard rallied from a 3-5 deficit in the decisive set.

Fifth seed Jarkko Nieminen of Finland ousted No. 3 Carlos Moya of Spain, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4.

On Saturday, Nieminen will face eighth seed Taylor Dent of the United States, who won the first set against Nicolas Thomann, 6-3, before the Frenchman retired with a right foot injury.
