Soriano enters the record book

CHICAGO, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- New York Yankees second baseman Alfonso Soriano went into the record book Monday with his 13th leadoff home run of the season.

It came off Bartolo Colon in a 6-3, 10-inning loss to the Chicago White Sox, and was his 35th round-tripper of the campaign.

It put him ahead of Brady Anderson, with whom he had shared the record. Anderson hit 12 leadoff homers for Baltimore in 1996, the year he hit 50 overall. Soriano added a second homer against Colon in the third inning.

"It's surprising to me," said Soriano. "I never thought I'd hit 13 leadoff homers, but I have the record now. I'm very happy."

Soriano accomplished the feat on the same day he was named American League Player of the Week.

In seven games last week, he batted .452 (14-for-31) with six runs, three doubles, and nine RBI. He also reached the 30-30 mark for the second consecutive season, becoming just the sixth player ever and second in the AL to do that.
