Novak, Canas post first-round wins

SHANGHAI, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Top seed Jiri Novak and wild card Guillermo Canas advanced Tuesday to the second round of the Shanghai Open.

Novak led the Czech Republic over Thailand in Davis Cup World Group qualifying over the weekend, winning the doubles and both his singles matches. He kept up his momentum by rolling to a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Dutchman Dennis van Scheppingen.

Novak's next opponent is Robert Kendrick of the United States, who snapped a six-match losing streak with a 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5) triumph over German Bjorn Phau.

Canas outlasted American qualifier Alex Kim, 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (7-0), in his second match since suffering a wrist injury in January.

The 25-year-old from Argentina will face American Eric Taino, who upset sixth seed Hyung-Taik Lee of Korea, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
