CHICAGO, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Jose Contreras pitched eight innings Tuesday as the New York Yankees clinched a sixth straight American League East title, 7-0, over the Chicago White Sox.
Having already booked its ninth straight postseason appearance, winning the division was a fait accompli for New York.
Even though the Boston could tie New York in wins, the Yankees clinched the division title by owning the tiebreaker over the Red Sox, who lead the wild card race.
Contreras (7-2) yielded four hits and struck out nine batters. The Cuban righthander, who won his third straight decision, walked just one batter.
