Hammond, Coles share lead

FARMINGTON, Pa., Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Donnie Hammond and PGA Tour rookie Gavin Coles each fired a 7-under-par 65 Thursday for a share of the first-round lead at the 84 Lumber Classic.

Rain and wind affected the tournament most of the day as Hurricane Isabel made her presence felt.

Grant Waite of New Zealand, Brent Schwarzrock and Michael Clarke II were a shot off the pace with 14 players were at 67 -- including Jerry Kelly and Lee Janzen.

Coles, an Australian, missed the cut in his first 13 cuts on the tour this year. This was only his second sub-70 score in the first round of a tournament, following a 66 at the Buick Open. He then shot an 81 and missed the cut.

Coles started the day with a 40-footer for birdie on the first hole. He added a 50-footer at the eighth.
