Fred Smoot hurt at practice

ASHBURN, Va., Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Defensive back Fred Smoot of Washington left the practice field Thursday after a collision with safety Matt Bowen.

The injury occurred during a passing drill. According to the team's Web site, the collision left Smoot unconscious for less than a minute after it happened.

He was taken to a hospital near Redskins Park in Ashburn, Va., for tests.

"It was sort of three guys going for the ball and Fred got hit in the head," said Coach Steve Spurrier. "We had a receiver (Cliff Russell) clearing through the middle and Fred was chasing him and the (Bowen) broke it up. A collision occurred somehow. Hopefully he's going to be okay. He was talking and moving afterwards."

Head athletic trainer Dean Kleinschmidt said he expects the diagnosis to be a concussion, but Smoot is expected to be cleared to play Sunday when the Redskins (2-0) host the New York Giants (1-1) in an NFC East showdown.
