Pittsburgh 8, Cincinnati 5

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Matt Stairs homered for the second time in three days Wednesday night as Pittsburgh built a big early lead and held on to defeat Cincinnati, 8-5.

Abraham Nunez put Pittsburgh ahead for good in the the first, driving in Tike Redman with a triple to right off Seth Etherton (2-4). Nunez scored on an errant relay throw from second baseman D'Angelo Jimenez.

Pittsburgh had a 4-1 advantage in the sixth when Jason Bay rapped an RBI triple off fellow rookie Juan Cerros and Stairs followed with his 19th home run. He just missed hitting the ball into the Allegheny River, a feat he accomplished in Monday's series opener.

The Reds got the tying run to the plate against Julian Tavarez with one out in the ninth, but the reliever got Sean Casey to hit into a double play and recorded his ninth save.
