N.Y. Yankees 6, Tampa Bay 5

NEW YORK, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Ruben Sierra snapped an eighth-inning tie with his eighth of the season Saturday afternoon as the New York Yankees edged Tampa Bay, 6-5.

Also, Bernie Williams hit two home runs on his 35th birthday in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.

After Aubrey Huff tied the contest in the top of the eighth with an RBI single, Sierra hit a solo shot off reliever Joe Kennedy (3-12) over the wall in center field leading off the bottom of the inning.

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera made the lead stand with a perfect ninth for his 36th save. Gabe White (2-0), who gave up the tying run in the eighth, lasted 1 2/3 innings for the win.

Williams hit his 13th and 14th homers of the season and reached base four times, and Aaron Boone collected two hits and an RBI, and New York matched a season high with its seventh straight victory.

Their major number for a playoff spot dwindled to 11 over Seattle.
